‘Predictions, Sure Things and Wild Guesses for IT in 2019’
Everybody enjoys hearing about what’s likely to happen in the future—not that anybody really knows exactly what’s going to take place, that is. Guesses—educated and wild alike—can spark interesting discussions. But it’s fun and entertaining to discuss the great things that are likely to happen, especially in the world of IT, where there’s never a dull news moment.
We may look back on some of the #eWEEKchat topics we discussed in 2018, which was a year marked by the fast ascendence of artificial intelligence everywhere, the rise of the edge computing and IoT markets, and smarty-pants chatbots telling us what to do through our personal devices.
As what happened in 2016 and 2017, we saw more nation-state hacking in politics, big business and small business. We saw the continued rise of RISC-V processing, machine learning apps, blockchain databases, citizen development, and the continued increase of inexpensive foreign-made phones from Huawei and others in the smartphone business.
We also saw the usual high number of major security breakdowns, data privacy debates, more new iPhones and the continued development of big data analytics, business intelligence, cognitive computing and robotics. We saw IT leaders, such as Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Google’s Sundar Pichai, called to Washington, D.C., to talk about data privacy issues and how their huge companies ostensibly are going to improve protection of their users’ data.
With this in mind, eWEEK is ending its sixth year of eWEEKchats (this one will be No. 73; we’ve had a special off-the-grid #eWEEKchat or two during the last half-dozen years) with a look ahead to 2019 and the new and different things we may expect to encounter. We will have some special guests online with us to offer their takes on all of this.
Everybody is invited: users, non-users, analysts, vendors, other journalists, seers, non-seers—everybody.
Need some ideas? eWEEK will run a series of “Predictions 2019” articles starting today. Read them over before you join our party next Wednesday.
Here comes a prediction right now: We will pose questions such as:
- What new devices, software and services might we expect to see in 2019?
- Will Facebook fall on its face in 2019?
- Will we ever be able to get a handle on keeping data secure? Will we ever be able to screen out the bad human elements?
- Can we ever have a completely secure election in the United States?
- How are stringent new EU geographic security requirements—which came into play last May—impacting data security globally?
- Are wearable computing devices dying?
- Could the fast development of cognitive computing turn into a serious problem?
- Can we expect any type of improvement in online personal data privacy in 2019?
Plan to join us for what promises to be a fun and illuminating hour on Dec. 12. Get your predictions ready and lay them out for us!
